Sutton & Cheam Water Polo: Structure

Squad Gender Age* Aims
Mini Polo Mixed 8 - 12 Basic Skills & Fun games
Development Mixed 11 - 15 Core Skills, Match Play
Senior Men 15+ Competitive Water Polo

*Ages mentioned are guidelines only and progression and inclusion in squads is by selection of the coaches. We adopt a flexible approach to reflect each individual's personal development; progression will also be based on ability and attitude.

Junior Water Polo (8 - 15 years old)

This squad is open to younger club members, preferably 8+ years old and strong swimmers, but ultimately by agreement with the club's junior water polo coach. Members are required to continue swimming in their usual club swim squads. Whilst some members of this squad will regard swimming competitively as their priority, they will be expected to be available for events as selected by the coach.

As well as our senior teams, the club also runs junior teams from Under 12 to Under 18 as follows:

Under 18

Most of our under 18 players compete with the 1st and/or 2nd teams in the London and Surrey Water Polo Leagues and would only compete as an Under 18 club team in the ASA National Junior competition. Individual players will also play in Surrey County and London Region sides in Inter County and Inter Regional competitions, run annually.

Under 16

Our Under 16 team competes in the London Water Polo League and the ASA National Youth Competition. Individual players will also play in Surrey County and London Region sides in Inter County and Inter Regional competitions, run annually.

Under 14/ Under15

Our Under 14 / Under 15 teams compete in the London Water Polo League with the more experienced and capable players also competing with the Under 16s. The team also plays in the ASA National Academy Competition. Individual players will also play in Surrey County and London Region sides in Inter County and Inter Regional competitions, run annually.

Under 12/ Under 13

We have a thriving and very enthusiastic band of Under 12/Under 13 players who compete in London Water Polo League. Again, the more capable players also compete with the Under 14s.

Further Development

We also encourage our junior players to take advantage of county, regional and national training opportunities:

London Regional Training Centre (Crystal Palace)

Regional Training Centres are an integral part of the National Performance program for Water Polo. There are numerous 'RTC's across the UK, each providing a nationally standardised programme of skill development which prepares young players who have been initially identified as having the potential to become 'elite' performers. We encourage our young players to train with the London Region RTC at Crustal Palace.

ASA Water Polo Talent Development programme

The ASA has a development pathway to ensure that once a young person's talent is identified, it is nurtured to help them reach their full potential as well as a specific Water Polo Talent Development programme.

Young players who have already shown promise in water polo and who have achieved certain levels of attainment which includes swimming, basic technique and game awareness are given access to quality coaching, athlete educational schemes and sports science within a training camp environment that will help prepare them for future international competition.

Players who excel at the national level may then progress to being selected by British Swimming to join their World Class development programme.

Since re-launching our junior water polo programme in 2000, over 150 juniors; both boys and girls have gone through the programme; all of whom have tasted competition and most are still playing. Many players have represented Surrey County and their ASA Region; over 20 have reached the National Academy and 7 have gone on to represent Great Britain as Juniors.

The club currently has 3 players in the GB juniors squads, and one in the GB Senior Team, Matt Holland who went on to be selected for the London 2012 Olympics and more recently, was part of the team that won the Gold medal in the 2014 Commmonwealth Water Polo Championships.
