Volunteering

Like most clubs, Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club is run by a whole army of dedicated volunteers without whom we would not be able to operate and we would like to thank them here and now for their help and support. They are very much appreciated!

Our volunteers are parents, grandparents, senior swimmers and even parents whose children have long since left the club!

Sutton & Cheam's volunteers do a range of different things. The club's main focus is on competitive swimming and water polo and this is what most people see from the coaches and people you see on the poolside every night of the week; to the team managers, gala and water polo officials you see most weekends at various competitions.

However, behind the scenes there is a surprising amount of work that needs to be done to keep the club running smoothly.

We have a very hard-working, dedicated committee that runs the club but beyond that, there are people who help on the club desk, people who order the club kit and run this website. There are others that arrange all our fixtures and entries for open meets. There are others that help out at galas by announcing or selling raffle tickets. There are others who help raise funds for the club by arranging social events like the quiz nights, bag-packing and Award evenings.

All of these jobs and many more are done within the club by volunteers who give up their time freely so that the club can function. They also enable the club to keep its costs down, benefitting members.
As you can see, there are many different roles the club needs help with and we are always on the lookout for new volunteers. We never turn down a willing volunteer.
For example, you might be surprised to learn that running a gala needs upwards of 30 people on the poolside and we can never have enough technical officials (referees, starters, timekeepers, judges) or non-technical officials (announcers, recorders, programme sellers, poolside marshals, runners etc.) So if you are willing to train to become a gala official, or if you can spare time occasionally to assist with selling programmes or raffle tickets at club galas, we would be very interested in hearing from you. Subject to prior approval, the club is very happy to fund courses for those volunteers willing to gain the Gala Officials qualification.
Similarly, if you think you may be able to help out in any other way; if you have particular skills you think may be helpful to us, or if you are not sure how you can help then please come along on a Wednesday evening which is a 'Club Night' at Cheam Leisure Centre and have a chat.
You can do as much or as little as you like. We recognise that it is far better to have a lot of volunteers doing a little, than too few volunteers becoming completely overworked so although your time may be limited, if everyone managed to do a little, it would make lighter work for everyone involved.
We value our volunteers and the work they do, and we do our best to support and develop individuals that are keen to progress, by arranging appropriate training courses. For example in a club made up mainly of youngsters, we would as a matter of course ensure all volunteers who have any contact with young children are adequately trained in Safeguarding and are all DBS checked.
Older swimmers and water polo players are actively encouraged to assist with coaching our younger members; and they are also encouraged to gain appropriate qualifications for which the club, again subject to prior approval, is usually prepared to help with course and tuition fees
We hope this gives you an idea as to the breadth of work that has to be done behind the scenes to make the club a successful one, and that you might be prepared to give a little of your time to support the club.
Any help you can give, however little, will make a difference.
We look forward to welcoming you to our team!
